SDAFA Stages Masked Performance at Palomar College

Campus Equity Week 2017 had the theme mAsk4CampusEquity, calling for local campus activists to use the unique power of the arts to provoke awareness and inspire change. SDAFA members Carol Whaley, David Milroy, Sharon Allen, and Leticia Pastrana along with a retired FT ally performed two skits written by Sharon Allen and Carol Whaley. The performance was in the style of Greek Theatre with 3 actors and a chorus, all wearing masks. A video of the second skit can be found on the SDAFA YouTube Channel.

Here is a preview of the script:

CHORUS: (in unisonCRY, ALL YOU STUDENTS, CRY!
CRY FOR YOUR INVISIBLE FACULTY.
CRY FOR THEIR FEARS AND FRUSTRATIONS OVER YOUR EDUCATION AND THEIR CAREERS.
JOIN THEM IN LAMENTING THE SLOW AND PAINFUL DEATH OF PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION.
PT Faculty Member (PTF), FT/Union Pres (FT/U), and DIstrict Board Pres (D) step out of the Chorus. FT/U and D immediately start to distance themselves from the PTF. PTF takes center stage, and FT/U and D stage left. NOTE: The idea is to show the distancing.
PTF: Thank you for seeing me today. I wanted to know if you received my grievance?
FT/U: Yes. We understand how you feel. This must make you feel awful.
PTF: I’ve filled out all your forms. Will you help me seek justice for the unfair evaluation of my job performance?
D: Forms and processes are very important.
D: [Turning to FT/U, stage whisper] You haven’t gone over budget have you?
PTF: The evaluation I received was unfair and prejudiced. It’s included in your forms.
FT/U: We understand how you feel. We are all one. But, there is nothing we can do for you.
D: We just can’t afford it.
C: (in unisonSTUDENTS DON’T NEED ANOTHER OVERPAID ADMINISTRATOR WITH NO TEACHING EXPERIENCE.
PART-TIME FACULTY DON’T NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANOTHER ‘FAILED’ VISION FOR STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES!
JOIN THEM IN LAMENTING THE SLOW AND PAINFUL DEATH OF PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION.
